There are a lot of fish species on my bucket list, but one that was highest on my list was a tiny little fish that most don’t know exist: the Rainbow Darter. I drove north a few hours to get within the range of these fish and met up with a friend who had figured out a location where these fish were abundant. Within an hour he helped me find one of these little fish hiding in the rocks in a small riffle. I dropped my tanago hook with a tiny piece of worm in front of it and before long he darted out and took the bait. I few quick pictures later I released this fish back to his home. Most people’s bucket list fish are large famous species, I’ll always be much happier to catch these little overlooked parts of our natural biodiversity

Sometimes genetics do funny things and you end up getting fish with proportions like this. Though I will admit that this was a beautifully colored fish and the camera didn’t do it justice
